One of the foremost conductors of our time, Marin Alsop represents a powerful and inspiring voice. The first woman to serve as the head of a major orchestra in the United States, South America, Austria, and Britain, she is internationally recognized for her innovative approach to programming and audience development, her deep commitment to education, and her advocacy for music’s importance in the world.

Devouring musical exotism
In 1864, a young Imperial Russian Navy officer was on a training trip around the world when the ship he was on sustained damage in the Southern Atlantic Ocean. The ship was taken to Rio de Janeiro for repairs and as the crew was forced to rest for a few months, they were able to become acquainted with the “Wonderful City,” as Rio is known in Brazil.

Since its first concert in 1954, the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra (Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo – Osesp) has become an inseparable part of São Paulo and Brazilian culture, promoting deep cultural and social transformation. Having toured Latin America, the United States, Europe, China, and Brazil, the São Paulo Symphony runs a large educational and outreach program for more than 25,000 children and teenagers every season.
